The making of a new museum in the Medina of Marrakesh

in this lecture, the project of the Making of a “New Museum in the Medina of Marrakesh”,a very brief introduction will outline the building’s architecture using the ground plan for the future museum. Then, I will present some of the artworks that will be exhibited in this space from the four main collections dealing with ancient Moroccan art, namely Moroccan faïence, women’s silk belts Berber flat weaves and Berber architectural elements.

Mr. Lucien Viola

Art historian from the Institute of Fine Arts of the New York University, both specialist in ancient Egyptian (he is a former student of Bernard Bothmer) and in contemporary art.  Active in New York between 1970-1991 as an antiquities dealer (Galerie L’Ibis), being the grandson of the legendary Egyptian ancient art dealer Maurice Nahman, he subsequently moved to Marrakech where he opened a gallery for contemporary art. Collecting ancient Moroccan artefacts, textiles and ceramics, he is opening a museum of ancient Moroccan art in the old part of the city.
